Racial Equity Statement
We believe that art makes children powerful. As members of the community of San Francisco, the artists of San Francisco Children’s Art Center resist and commit our work towards dismantling systems of white supremacy and oppression.
Every child has the right to creative self-expression and we use our power and leverage our spirit to center the work of art making with children towards the goals of racial equity, justice, and collective liberation.
SFCAC addresses structural racism as it exists in our educational systems by prioritizing partnerships with school sites that serve historically-marginalized communities of San Francisco. For too long, BIPOC students have not had equal access to expressive arts engagement and our aim is to address that opportunity gap.
For over 40 years, SFCAC has engaged children in a process-oriented methodology that honors self-expression and individual and collaborative decision-making. Through active listening and supporting children as they explore their ideas, memories, and feelings, we empower young people to develop their identity and sense of self through creative exploration.
The intersectionality of race, culture, gender, ability, age, and socio-economic status of the individuals in our organization reflects the communities we serve. We view art making as a vehicle to mitigate trauma and foster deeper connections through our shared humanity.
SFCAC is anti-racist in our work. Through the rigorous evaluation of our standards and practices and through team trainings, we continually examine and revise our curriculum and our teaching methods. We honor the values and amplify the voices of the communities we serve. We view all community members as stakeholders in the leadership and governance of our organization.
Art gives us the tools to reimagine and create vital changes needed in our society. San Francisco Children's Art Center is committed to the continual evolution of our work. It is our responsibility to nurture the human potential of the young people we have been entrusted to teach and protect.
