BLACK LIVES MATTER.
San Francisco Children’s Art Center stands with communities of color and allies to resist and collectively dismantle the systems of white supremacy and brutality that harm Black bodies and Black communities. This national inflection point has leveraged our intention, our spirit, and our minds to center our work of artmaking with children towards the goals of racial equity, justice, and collective liberation.
Solidarity is an active practice. It can not be only words. SFCAC recognizes the imperative for actionable steps that use our power and privilege to dismantle systems of inequity and oppression. SFCAC’s Anti-Racism Committee has embarked on an initiative to transform our curriculum and pedagogy to effect social change, to amplify the voices of BIPOC youth, and to foster authentic allyship in our partner communities.
Accountability is crucial as we critically examine our existing practices, our own biases, and the ways that we have unintentionally perpetuated the status quo. We will strengthen the social bonds with our community partners, listening with care and intention so our work can better support their needs. Open and honest discussions with BIPOC members of our teaching staff, Board of Directors, and community partners will guide our collaborative work towards justice and empower SFCAC stakeholders from non-dominant cultures in the leadership and governance of our organization.
While we hold the pain and suffering of our community, we also hold the hope that through the arts, we can foster deeper connections to our shared humanity. The arts are transformative and give us the tools to reimagine our society. San Francisco Children's Art Center is committed to transforming our own work so we can more fully nurture the human potential of the young people we have been entrusted to teach and protect.
